PMA's 4th annual food drive is underway!

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the commercialization that goes along with the holiday season, but the gift of giving at the holidays can bring more joy than receiving.

There are people who are denied the simple things in life – things like a roof over their head, or even a cooked meal. This is especially a problem during the harsh New England winter months.

According to a 2010 study conducted by The Greater Boston Food Bank, annually in Eastern Massachusetts over 394,000 individuals received food that was distributed by the Greater Boston Food Bank – a 23-percent increase over the previous four years. This is largely in part due to one of the worst economic recessions this country has ever seen.

The study also concluded an estimated 44% of these individuals must choose between paying for food or utilities/heat, while 37% must choose between paying for food or medical care.

While this is a harsh reality, there are ways that we all can help. That’s why Property Management of Andover decided to start the “Halt Hunger at the Holidays” food drive in 2010. Over the past three holiday food drives, we’ve donated 3,348 pounds of food, which is the equivalent of 2,575 meals.

Over the past two years, Property Management of Andover pledged $0.25 for every pound of food and goods donated to The GBFB. That has added up to $640.00, which meant an additional 1,565 meals! We’re pledging the same $0.25 per pound this year, too.

The GBFB in Boston, MA is the backbone of hunger-relief in Eastern Massachusetts. The food and goods donated to them in turn gets sent to local food pantries and soup kitchens, shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and day-care centers in 190 Eastern Mass. communities, from cities like Lawrence all the way to Fall River. It also gets sent to our veterans who served proudly for our country.

Your job is simple: Drop your goods off at our PMA office between the hours of 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. Monday-Friday before Wednesday, Dec. 18. We’ll take it from there, delivering the food straight to The GBFB.

A small donation of goods such as bread, cereal, rice, pasta, nuts, canned food, condiments, and cleaning/personal hygiene products can go a long way. It may even be the difference between a holiday season to remember, and one to forget.

Thank you for your time and generosity, and of course, Happy Holidays!
